Football Tickets on Sale - July 17
Because of the floods, single game ticket sales have been pushed back to July 17. Tickets are $50 a piece through the box office. The number to call is 800 IA Hawks.
Todd and Hool already have designated seats as multi-game ticket holders.
The foe on September 27 is Northwestern. Don't laugh. They beat us last year. (Let me retract that per Hool's comment. I was thinking of the 2006 game.) Here's a look at the new Kinnick for those of you haven't been back for awhile.

Why did 80s Cars Suck So Bad?
One thing about the 80s. I think it was the decade of shame for autos. Unlike the 60s or 70s, I can't think of a single car that's worth restoring from this era. Probably the only autos that look cool from this decade are the European models - no, not Todd's Renault- more like the Kraut cars, but those don't exactly stir up any memories since I didn't know anyone who could afford an 80s German car during the 80s.

Harold Eugene "Short" Peterseim, 1924-2008
The following is from Locke. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and Meg.
Hey all,
Dad passed away last night around 10:30 pm. Mom and I were with him at the end, and it was peaceful and good.
As I've told so many of you, Short dreaded a lingering, helpless illness, and being a 'burden.' And while he worked so bravely the past year to do the chemo and hang around to spend more time with us and his grandchildren, in his heart he had been ready to go for a long time. If he'd had his choice, he would have gone two weeks ago when he got really sick.
He was still able to react to visitors and his grandson Warren all weekend, but yesterday he was less responsive, unable to eat or drink much, and they started him on morphine. So we were very thankful that this happened now, at the right time, rather than drag out in that state or worse for even another day.
Everything about this process has made it feel, for me at least, very natural and right. We had a year to spend with him still doing the stuff he loved--fishing, watching the Cubs, playing with Warren and our dog Ruthie -- and had him home here with us the past two weeks. Last night after the hospice nurse left, we simply moved him into the next room and I helped embalm him. As weird and morbid as that might seem, it too really seemed to help make it feel like a natural, good thing.
(The only hitch in the process was when the hospice nurse took the Vicodin and morphine and flushed them down the toilet. I was like "Nooooooooooo!!!")
Visitation will be Wed afternoon and all day Thursday. Services will be Friday, 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church here in Kalona, Iowa.
Thank you all again for your support this past week and past year. And believe me when I say that while it's been a tough year, it's had many wonderful moments. I know there will be some sad times ahead this week, but right now everything feels very right, very full of peace and grace. And I'm looking forward to what I'm sure will be a week full of stories and laughter about Short.

More Flood Photos

Todd and Julie sent me this link with some more flood shots of our beloved campus. Maybe they shouldn't have built that "Advanced" Technology Lab building so close to the river? Then again, what do I know - silly liberal arts major?
The Coralville Comfort Inn

This is the luxurious Coralville Comfort Inn hotel for our gathering and sleeping needs. Todd, Hool and I have stayed here before. It's certainly nicer than the Boat House and I believe it was unaffected by the flood. Here's the link to the web site for more details and photos. Bring your bathing suit for the hot tub. Bring your appetite for the free continental breakfast.

I know many of you saw this, but I had to make it officially part of the blog. I wanted to embed the video, but nobody on YouTube will let me. But click here if you want a taste.

Flooding - Check Out Mayflower
Buck's Old Place Taken Out by Tornado

Seeing all the news about floods and tornadoes in Iowa right now reminds me that my old apartment on Iowa Avenue, affectionately referred to as the Travelodge, was crushed by the tornadoes a few years back. That one on the top floor to the right was mine. Good thing I moved into the Boat House, eh? My beloved Happy Joe's was also destroyed. Here's a link to some more shots of the devastation. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://x08.xanga.com/82eb8b440663249305748/z32519433.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.xanga.com/wishful_thinkr/474063257/item.html&h=267&w=400&sz=21&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=hGFDCPWlPMIPDM:&tbnh=83&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Diowa%2Bcity%2Btornado%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den

We've lost a number of personalities that I associate with the 80s. Here are the ones that come to mind:
Ronald Reagan
Walter Payton
Flo Jo
Reggie White
Sam Kinison
Chris Farley
John Candy
Phil Hartman
Charles Rocket
Robert Palmer
Falco
Michael Hutchence
Paul Hester, drummer for Crowded House
Laura Branigan
Jimmy McShane, singer of Baltimora (Tarzan Boy)
Freddie Mercury
Benjamin Orr from the Cars
Warren Zevon
Harry Carey
Reggie Robie, best Hawkeye punter ever
Pretty much every Ramone
Half of Milli Vanilli
Kevin Dubrow from Quiet Riot
Rick James
More professional wrestlers than can be imagined. Go here for a complete list.

Your Cell Phone
It would be handy for me to have your cell phone numbers (a land line will do if you don't have a cell, Fred Flinstone) programmed in, in case we need to reach other before and during the reunion. You can email them to me at ssturgeon@san.rr.com or post them on here. Mine is 858-472-5669.
Room Logistics - Please Read
Just went through my notes on the rooms, head count, etc. We have 10 rooms total and here’s how allocation looks right now.
1- Me and Betty
2- Todd and Julie
3- Locke – might stay in Kalona.
4- Meg and husband
5- Ruggs and Kathy
6- Rice – thinks he’ll be solo
7- Hool will probably bring his wife, Lori
8- Room for Dave and Lori Niemeyer - they will be down for the game also
9- Cone – solo - we may be able to free up a room if Cone and Rice room together
10 -Lalo – I believe she’s committed
Sluggo is not likely since he coaches high school football on weekends.
Duff/Mav – he will definitely come if he is living back in Illinois again by then; lives in Arizona now I believe
Cone, Rice, Locke, are you open to bunking together - 2 per room?
You can email me at the usual email address if you are unable to post: ssturgeon@san.rr.com
Friendly Discussions

Buck having a discussion with Locke's friend, Rob, as Meg looks on. I'm sure I must have lost this one because as you can see Rob is a smoker. And as Jerry Seinfeld so wisely points out, you can't win arguments with smokers.
"They wave their cigarette in your face - 'see that's my whole point right there.' And they always get the last word - 'Really, that's what you think?' Then they blow the last puff of smoke in your face and put out the cigarette on the floor with their foot. And it's over.' "
