In Memoriam - Laura Bone

I don't know how many of you knew Laura Bone. Since she was a classmate, I thought it was appropriate to note her passing. If you didn't know, she passed away a few years ago. I believe that she lost her fight with cancer, which left her unable to take chemo treatments during her pregnancy. I'm not aware of any other classmates' passing. If you know of anyone else, please let us all know.

Lalo and John Cartland

Lalo, I think you were supposed to do a goofy face in this shot. Another one from the Bubble House. Nice space shuttle. I thought we'd all be riding around in those things by now.

A Glimpse at Hayden's Recruiting in '88

Note the reference to Ferentz. These guys went on to share the Big 10 Title in 1990 and made the trip to Pasadena, where they lost to Washington 46-34. Stupid Huskies. I wonder if the Hawks had to wear their helmets on the plane ride home? The 1988 team earned a trip to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta against NC State. Todd, Buck, Dirks and Dave Pardoe witnessed the disappointing 28-23 loss in person. But we got to visit Graceland and New Orleans as part of the road trip.

Buck

Apparently still into Fonzie.

Sippin' Some Brews

Hool, Ruggs and Dirks enjoying some Old Style Lights.

Meg and Locke

This one's from Locke's collection and I believe it was from the Boat House New Year's Eve party, which sadly I missed.

Lalo, Todd, Julie and Heather

This one was taken at a Bubble House party. Must have been around spring time judging by Todd's sunburned face.

4 Months Until the Reunion

We're exactly 4 months away now. Mark your calendars.

I only wish I had one of these nifty painter's caps from back in the day.

Hool and Mav in the Movies

Hool and Mav in character from a Peterseim Production. Was this from Disco Metamorphosis or another one?

Hawkeyes Crush Ohio State in Hoops

Another snapshot of things 20 years ago. I had B.J. Armstrong in one of my classes. Pretty quiet. Nice guy. I have the Wheaties box from the Bulls' Three-peat with B.J. on the squad as well as a Hawkeye trading card I got from Dirks. I believe I had to give him my USD student ID, with me in a 'stache for it. Who got the bargain? ;-)

Rice in Disco Metamorphosis

Rice from Locke's film, Disco Metamorph-osis. It looks like Dirks was part of the lighting crew. It would be awesome to see this film again.

Buck Makes it to Class

That's me in the lower left corner.

"That's me in the spot... light... losing my religion." Sorry, I couldn't resist. This is proof that I actually attended some of my classes while at the U of I. Pierre "Pete" DuPont visited some of us Poli Sci students as part of his failed presidential bid.

If You Can't Remember the Blog URL, You Can Google It Now

If you Google Iowa Boathouse Reunion or Iowa Boat House Reunion, etc. this blog is now the first thing that comes up. Meaningless information? Perhaps. But if you're talking with old Boat House friends and you can't recall the URL, you can direct them to the blog in this manner.

Ruggs, Cone

Ruggs checking his odor. Cone holding the inflatable cow. I think my sister sent me that cow from work. It was a promo item she got for their Conoco convenience stores.

Strickland, the Other Boat House Resident

Strickland, Mav's dog, pictured with my friend, Angie. The funniest thing I remember her doing was instantly grabbing an entire giant block of cheese off the floor that Todd had dropped while fishing around in the fridge. She scampered away and we never saw that cheese again. I'm sure she must have moved on to doggie heaven after these 20 years, Tom? Even though she interrupted my napping many times by barking at the grass in the back yard, I liked her a lot. I remember Angie (she was blonde) could never remember Strickland's name and always had a different one. Spineloinker was the funniest one. I guess she wasn't a big basketball fan.

The Reunion Agenda as of Now

As of now, the plan of record is something like the following:
  • Check in Friday afternoon/evening at the Comfort Inn Coralville.
  • I figured we could congregate at The Edge in Coralville for drinks and food Friday evening.
  • Saturday morning we can all tailgate at Todd's cousin Brent's spot. He rents a big back yard of a house behind Kinnick and right next to Melrose Market (not sure it's called that anymore). It's a very sweet spot. Parking is limited so we'll need to carpool and/or walk a ways.
  • Then of course comes the homecoming game. Todd and Hool are already set for tickets as they are basically season ticket holders. The rest of us will need to fend for ourselves. Again, tickets go on sale in July. And of course there are always scalpers.
  • Saturday evening is pretty much open. We can all go back to the hotel and regroup after the game and then head out for dinner, perhaps downtown for some reminiscing. It's changed drastically and the faces are mighty young down there now. ;-) But it's homecoming weekend so they should be expecting us old farts to be wandering around. ;-) Or we can check out one of the many newer Coralville eating/drinking spots.
  • Sunday - time for many of us to catch flights and head back home. Others will no doubt be moving slowly and nursing their cracked helmets from making merry all weekend.

If you have ideas of other things you'd like to do, lay 'em on me! I think we should find a Karaoke bar for Cone!

Our Resident Film Critic

I found this little gem in an issue from February 11, 1988 - Locke's review of "She's Having a Baby." Check out the other movies showing in town and note the specials at MT Cohen and Mamas. Both establishments are gone now. The Old Capitol Center is like a ghost town and Mamas is called the Dublin Underground now I believe. 25 cent draws of Fosters. Sweet.

The Basement

Is that Mav underneath there? I love the stock of Shasta. Could there BE any more shoes in this shot?

Time Capsule Moment

I have a couple of old Daily Iowans and thought you might enjoy a few time capsule moments. U2 graced the front page of this 1987 edition. I was at this show. It was aweseome! (The "opening group" incidentally was the BoDeans.) In the cowboy hat, Bono no doubt reminds you of another Irish lad.

The Kitchen

A place to express your views on life. A places to scratch your belly. A place for Cone to make pasta or Suddenly Salad. The kitchen held one key sign that we were pre-dominantly liberal arts majors. The sink was dripping so we had a broom stick wedged between the handle and the wall. Dirks came over and quipped, "I guess it would be too difficult to change the washer." Confounded engineering students and their confusing ways. ;-)

Pass on This Blog to Friends of the Boat House

Just a reminder, if you know of any non-former-residents who would like to be part of the Boat House reunion, please pass on the link to this blog. I've passed it on to a couple of the Bubble House guys already. I know many of you have mentioned trying to get other former "G-Men" to join in the festivities.

As the time draws nearer, there will be more details about the specifics, so they can use this as a resource.

Stacking Stuff is Funny

Todd and Julie. Props, especially when stacked, make the funniest photos, right? Seemed funny at the time. I think the problem is Todd wasn't passed out. It's not really that funny to stack stuff on a sober guy. Whose guitar was this?

The Bar

Cone and Dirks belly up. Notice the Bull Durham poster and Bruce Babbitt sticker in the back. I hear Cone's politics have changed. ;-)

Buck on the Phone

Old timey phone with cord? Check. Short shorts on a dude? Check. Mullet? Check. It's officially the 80s.

We Found Lalo!

And she is planning to make it to the Boat House reunion! Thank you Julie Ohl and FaceBook!

At The Field House

More photos from Locke. Rice gets a tongue lashing from Don "Bix." Locke and Meg.

Mav at Bat

Tom "Mav" Duffy demonstrat-ing proper batting technique. Could there BE any more newspapers in the background? Notice Ruggs' Patton helmet and of course the typical large number of beer bottles on the mantle.

Name That Dance!

It looks very organized. Electric Slide? The Bird? Ruggs, Cone, Hool, Mav and Dirks. I do believe Hool is wearing a sweet Schlitz shirt.

Shenanigans

Ruggs, attempting to set the world's record for most populated piggy back ride, with Dirks, Cone and Sandy. Todd would join in the chicken fight, but his shirt is too nice.

Boat House Toga Party 1988

Locke and Hool with "togas" under their jackets. I recall that I opted for the bath robe approach. Number 2 of 2 flyers from my archives. I don't suppose anyone saved any others? I remember one that had dozens of photos of Cone. I think it was a party for.....Cone's birthday. Locke, did you save any of these?

Messin' with Cone

It's always fun to mess with the passed out guy. Hats, glasses, markers, whatever it takes. Cone is sporting Explore Monagamy on his person, referencing the George Michael video. Remember when MTV had videos? I'm guessing it's the a.m. since Todd doesn't have his contacts in yet. Whose 80s jeans with the ripped out knees are those? I think they might be back in style.

Halloween 1987

Hall and Oates, a.k.a. Hool and Cone. Locke as Dean Stockwell in Blue Velvet, Buck as Tom Petty and Todd as Father Ohl. I recall Duff as Jerry Garcia (this was a musical year). Wish I had a photo. Tom, do you have one?

End of Semester Party Flyer

I belive this was Locke's masterpiece. No PC, no Photoshop. Just a pair of scissors, glue, a photocopier and a vision. Click on it to enlarge and better see all the personalities. If you can correctly identify them all, you can collect a prize at the reunion. Just f'ing with ya. There's no prize, but I'll buy you a beer.

Halloween 1988

Another great Halloween party. I combined some shots from my stash with the ones I lifted from Locke's collection. Todd and I were the Festronk brothers, a.k.a. "Two Wild and Crazy Guys," Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd. Our costumes were flops as most people pegged us for golfers or pimps. I guess the reference was pretty lost by then. Locke was unmistakably Beatlejuice. Cone - Marilyn Monroe? Hool, were you a magician, or something more specific? I believe Ruggs was a last minute Bono. Other people I recognize are: Pitts, Hendu, Chuck, John and Tammy Cartland, Sandy, Smoothin' John, Terri Nalavenko and Julie McNulty, now Julie Ohl.
